How EU Regulations Are Changing the Artificial Grass Industry

Artificial grass has become a popular alternative to natural grass because it offers a consistent appearance, reduced watering requirements, and relatively low maintenance. It is widely used in gardens, sports facilities, playgrounds, landscaping projects, and commercial spaces.

However, environmental concerns are changing the artificial turf industry, particularly in Europe. According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), granular infill used on artificial sports pitches is a significant source of microplastic emissions. The EU's Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 introduces restrictions on intentionally added synthetic polymer microparticles, including polymeric infill used on sports surfaces.

Under the regulation, the restriction on the sale of this type of infill takes effect on 17 October 2031, following an eight-year transition period. This is an important development for sports facility owners, contractors, distributors, and artificial grass suppliers.

Why Are Traditional Artificial Turf Infill Materials Under Scrutiny?

Many traditional artificial football pitches use rubber granules, including recycled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), as infill. These particles help support the turf fibres and contribute to the playing surface's cushioning and performance.

However, infill particles can escape from sports fields through footwear, maintenance equipment, rainwater, and drainage systems. When released into the environment, these particles can contribute to microplastic pollution.

The challenge is not simply to replace one material with another. New sports turf systems must also maintain suitable playing performance, durability, drainage, and safety while reducing the loss of particles into the surrounding environment.

For projects in Europe, buyers should therefore consider the entire turf system rather than focusing only on the appearance or initial purchase price.

What Are the Alternatives for Sustainable Artificial Grass?

The industry is exploring different approaches to reduce environmental impact and improve the long-term performance of artificial turf systems.

1. Alternative infill materials

Non-polymeric infill materials, such as suitable mineral or plant-based materials, may be options for certain applications. Their suitability depends on the sport, climate, performance requirements, and maintenance arrangements.

2. Recycled materials

Recycled plastics can be used in some artificial turf products, including turf fibres. However, recycled content alone does not automatically make a product compliant with microplastics regulations. Buyers should check the material composition, intended application, and applicable requirements.

3. Improved drainage and particle containment

Effective drainage design and suitable filtration or containment measures can help reduce the movement of infill particles into drainage networks. These systems should be designed for the specific turf installation and maintained throughout its service life.

4. Easier maintenance and end-of-life management

A sustainable artificial grass solution should also consider cleaning, repairs, material separation, and disposal or recycling after use. Better planning can help reduce waste and improve long-term project value.

How Should Buyers Choose Artificial Grass for Different Applications?

Not every artificial grass product requires the same technical specification. The right choice depends on the intended use.

Sports fields: Evaluate fibre structure, pile height, density, shock absorption, drainage, and the requirements of the relevant sports standards.

Residential gardens: Consider appearance, softness, UV resistance, drainage, and ease of cleaning.

Commercial landscaping: Prioritise durability, consistent product quality, installation requirements, and maintenance costs.

Playgrounds and leisure areas: Assess the intended use, surface safety requirements, drainage, and the suitability of the complete installation system.

What Should You Ask Your Artificial Grass Supplier?

Before placing an order, importers, wholesalers, and contractors should clarify several important points:

What materials are used in the turf fibres, backing, and any supplied infill?

Is the product intended for sports, landscaping, residential, or commercial use?

What drainage performance and installation requirements apply?

Are technical data sheets, test reports, and relevant compliance documents available?

What maintenance, recycling, and end-of-life options are recommended?
